Hola Domestikans!
I am Emiko Stock, a multimodal anthropologist and creative ethnographer based between Cairo and Phnom Penh.
.
I mix feminist documentary, analog photography, soundscaping, writing, and drawing to explore how art and anthropology can spark wonder in everyday life. My methods are playful and relational: I layer, remix, and improvise to connect with communities and invite reciprocal curiosity.
.
I have taught at Cornell University and Hamilton College in New York, and The American University in Cairo, and co-founded CoMMPCT (The Collective for Multimodal Makers, Publishers, Collaborators and Teachers). My short films have screened internationally, and I often curate and jury at festivals. I am also co-editor, writer, and sound artist of the first forthcoming special issue of the Cultural Anthropology Journal to foreground sonic experiences. As someone who still “can’t draw” but does it anyway, I share my process in The Sketchy Anthropologist, a newsletter about the nerdy corner where anthropology meets sketchnotes.
.
In my courses, you’ll discover how to observe everyday life in creative ways—and translate those insights into poetic musings, sketchy notes, and evocative soundtracks and images.
.
Come join me as we explore how creativity and anthropology can spark new ways of being in the world!
