Guided Course: Produce a lifestyle shoot for Instagram
“This is your chance to put your skills into practice and create something you’d be proud to see on a real Instagram feed. The goal isn’t just to take nice photos, but to think like a brand storyteller: how do you capture mood, detail, and personality in a way that feels authentic? Below you’ll find a few directions you can take—choose the one that excites you most, or mix and match to make it your own. 1. A flat lay mini-series Design a set of overhead images that highlight products with carefully chosen props, textures, and colors. Pay attention to composition and negative space to keep the focus sharp. Example project: A flat lay of skincare products with natural elements like leaves, towels, and warm light to evoke freshness and self-care. 2. Lifestyle storytelling with context Photograph products “in the wild,” showing them in a real-life setting that reflects the brand’s personality. Example project: A coffee brand captured through cozy breakfast scenes, featuring mugs, pastries, and sunlight streaming across a table. 3. Human connection through model shots Show how a product fits into daily life by incorporating a model. Focus on gestures, expressions, and natural interactions that feel relatable. Example project: A model carrying a tote bag through the city, framed against textured walls and soft urban lighting. 4. Mood-driven brand edit Shoot a cohesive series of images unified by a specific color palette or mood. Use props, light, and styling to create consistency. Example project: A pastel-toned set for a stationery brand, where notebooks, pens, and soft fabrics align in a calm, minimal aesthetic. 5. A mini Instagram campaign Combine flat lays, in-situ shots, and model photos into one unified set that tells a full story. Think of it as a narrative flow for a brand’s Instagram grid. Example project: A lifestyle drink brand shown across three styles: a styled overhead, a drink on a café table, and a model holding the bottle mid-laugh. Don’t aim for perfection—aim for a story. Each shot is an opportunity to explore how light, color, and composition can shape the way a brand is perceived. Trust your eye, keep experimenting, and you’ll finish with a set of images that feel polished, personal, and ready to share.”
